Ask A Doctor

I had my uterus removed over three months ago. It was supposed to change my life. Now, instead of hemorraging for 10 days a month, I ache from head to toe, still have pelvic pain, sweat like crazy, cry half of every day and rarely sleep. My throat has been sore for a few days. I'm worried I may be coming down with strep or pneumonia from being totally exhausted.

I feel like my surgeon is just blowing me off. She put me on prozac a few weeks ago to supposedly help me emotionally but it's not helping. Last week I spoke with one of the nurses, and she told me to see my primary care doctor. The doctor wants me to try an estrogen patch even though I don't want to do HRT. She won't give me anything to help me sleep. Ibuprofen doesn't help the pain any more. Before surgery, I was healthy except for the heavy periods - now, I feel like a total wreck.

What am I supposed to do? Is there any hope?

It sounds like you are really having a tough time! If you are feeling suicidal, the first thing you MUST do is to call 911 or drive yourself to the nearest Emergency Room for immediate care.

You need to know that the symptoms you describe sound like menopausal symptoms which could be helped tremendously with estrogen therapy. If you had your ovaries removed and you were not in menopause prior to your surgery, your body is screaming for hormones that are no longer there. There are many women that report that without their hormone replacement therapy, they feel depressed and suicidal.

For your long term health, this really is the best time to find a primary care doctor and make an appointment. Most surgeons are not experts in managing menopause issues. Find a physician that has an interest in women's health issues, especially hormone therapy. Take a list of symptoms you describe and talk to this doctor with all the details. Be sure and tell the doctor everything you are feeling.

With the right physician and the plan of action you can be feeling better soon!
