What is Lynch syndrome, and what does it mean if I test positive for it?

Lynch syndrome, also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCCC), is an inherited genetic condition that increases the risk of developing colon cancer and other cancers. In women, it also increases the risk of endometrial and ovarian cancers.

If your family is prone to colorectal cancers in particular or any cancers of the gastrointestinal system, you might consider getting a genetic test to find out if you have Lynch syndrome. Though not all people who carry the mutated genes that characterize Lynch syndrome develop cancerous tumors, the condition does predispose such individuals to the disease. If you know you carry Lynch syndrome, you might make more aggressive and proactive decisions about your health care with your physicians. For example, Lynch syndrome carriers are more likely than the general population to develop cancerous tumors at a younger age than is typically expected. So if you have Lynch, you and members of your family know to begin cancer screenings at a younger age and to act quickly on any suspicious findings. Some people whose families carry Lynch syndrome and have had many cases of cancer among close family members choose to remove organs at the very first sign of a problem, or even before, in order to prevent the development of tumors.

It is important to note that Lynch syndrome means that one has inherited a higher risk of developing cancer, not cancer itself. It is also important to remember that not all carriers of Lynch syndrome develop cancer.
