Ask A Doctor
I am considering not getting treatment for my late-stage uterine cancer; I am scared of chemo and radiation, and everything I’ve read is so discouraging. But I’m not ready to die. How do I decide between treatment and hospice?
Late-stage cancer is such a frightening diagnosis that it is difficult to think clearly and make good decisions. And too often there are no good decisions to be made. Ultimately, it is up to you, but you should absolutely rely on others to help you decide your path. Ask your doctors, your family, your friends, and your spiritual advisers for input. And, of course, ask the HysterSisters. Many of them have been in the same place you are now, or know people who were, and they will be there for you to share their experiences. You are not alone.
Please note that some information you find on the Internet is outdated. Some cancer survival statistics have been improved greatly in recent years as new treatment options have become available. Get a second opinion, or even a third opinion, before you decide to forego treatment. Talk to survivors about their experiences to see if you can overcome your understandable fear of chemo and radiation.
If you decide to go without treatment and choose hospice instead, know that there is a great deal of support for that as well. You can have hospice care in your own home if you prefer, and these services provide equipment, medication, and caregivers to make you as comfortable as possible through the end of your journey. For many, choosing hospice takes as much courage as choosing treatment.
The emotional and physical toll of either option is tremendous. Rely on others when you need to for strength and inspiration.
