Ask A Doctor
After intercourse (and during) i am having a sharp lingering pain in the area of my left ovary. Is this normal? It lasts several hours. I am approximately 8 weeks post op LAVH. I kept my ovaries.
Answered by Susan Hunter, M.D.
Of course you should check with your doctor, but you likely are continuing to heal and intercourse is probably irritating that process on your left side. It probably will get better with time. Consider motrin with food 30 minutes to an hour before intercourse if possible. There is still swelling and healing which is occurring in the abdomen/pelvis for six-plus months after surgery. You are healed enough to feel good and do normal activities but the process continues inside your abdomen. If you are having any pain which is worsening you need to call your doctor immediately.
Answered by Deborah Wilson, M.D.
It may be that you are still healing inside. I would recommend giving it some time. If the pain after intercourse persists for another few months it would be worth getting an ultrasound to see if you have an ovarian cyst, but my prediction is that the pain will go away with time.
