Ask A Doctor
I need help. I need to feel empowered and knowledgeable about my diagnosis. And to do that I need to do research and find survivors and positive stories. I need to grasp hope and find a connection with anyone who has beat this and lived a full life.
But the internet is so vast and statistics are staggering and extremely frightening. Can you help me with my search? Can you help me find positive stories of survival from this?
Being told one has cancer can be a very frightening experience and puts just about everyone on an emotional roller coaster. After only a few minutes of frantically searching the web, the information, possibilities, statistics, and choices can become overwhelming.
For support from those who are involved in cancer survival, there are several web sites, most notably Cancer Survivors Network–“a vibrant community established by people just like you whose lives have been touched by cancer,” Cancer Compass–“Empowering cancer patients to make informed decisions,” and Inspire–“connects patients, families, friends and caregivers for support and inspiration.”
Here at HysterSisters.com there are many supportive and informed women willing to lend a cyber hug and wisdom based on their experiences. The search engine on the site is really handy for finding others with the same diagnosis with whom you can connect. There are also informative articles that are helpful.
For example, one member has shared on various threads about two women she knows, both who had received the "we can't do any more for you" speech from their oncologists; both went home and are still living healthy lives...years and years (over 10 and over 6) later. She also states that she has seen videos on a cancer center website about two stage 4 lung cancer patients who beat their cancer and has read on the Mayo Clinic site about other cancer patients who beat the odds.
The most important thing to remember, above all else–You are NOT a number, You are NOT a statistic, You are a FIGHTER!!
You can empower yourself with hope and knowledge and you, too, can be a success story no matter the outcome.
