Ask A Doctor
What is this vertical skin in the middle of my vagina after A&P?
Surgical repair is sometimes required when there are weaknesses in the vaginal walls that cause bulges into the vaginal canal. A weakness in the anterior (front) wall is known as cytocele, and a weakness in the posterior (back) wall is called a rectocele. Some cytoceles and rectoceles are small and do not require treatment. In some cases, though, surgical repair is called for. If repairs of both the anterior and posterior vaginal walls are performed at the same time, this is called A&P, or anterior and posterior repair.
Some women report that after A&P surgery, they notice unusual ridges of skin or flaps of tissue inside the vagina. Sometimes these interfere with the enjoyment of sexual intercourse, to the point of preventing penetration of more than a couple of inches. It could be scar tissue, or simply a new shape to the vaginal canal from the suturing and tightening required by the repairs.
If your doctor is not concerned about the interfering tissue, you can continue to have intercourse carefully in order to stretch the tightened tissues gradually. Your doctor might also give you estrogen cream to help with the elasticity of the tissue in the vagina. The tightness should gradually relax and begin to feel more normal in a few months’ time. If it does not, consult your doctor again about the problem.
