I was on the bubble deciding if I wanted to have a hysterectomy. I have had endo for over 11 years. I wanted to keep all the organs that I was born with. I knew if I could just make it to menopause, I would probably be fine. (I am 41.)
I had tried all drug avenues available to me throughout the last 11 years. Some worked well (Syneral -- a nasal spray.) Most others were very ineffective, as well as expensive. However, I didn't care about the cost. I wanted to keep my organs.
After experiencing drug side effects, as well as still having endo pain (even during sex--not acceptable!), I decided enough is enough. I walked in to my doctor's office and asked for all possible solutions. Two of the three solutions left for me were surgery. I decided it was time!
The morning of the surgery I hurt so bad, I knew it was the right thing. However, as they were wheeling me into surgery and giving me the "relaxing" drug, I wanted to shout out, "NO! I have changed my mind. I don't want a hysterectomy!"
I am now 4 days from my surgery (LAVH-BSO) and am doing great.
No sex for 6 weeks. Don't get me wrong. My dh and I have not had a great sex life this past year because of the endo. However, as we approach our empty nest years that is something that is definitely in the plans. He assured me over and over again that we would make sure that our sex life will be as good as it use to be, regardless of what organs I have. He truly has been the best!
If you are on the bubble about deciding if a hysterectomy is for you, remember that it is a personal decision. I made sure that I had done everything I possibly could do to make the pain tolerable. My quality of life had decreased to a level that was unacceptable for me.
My mother (from the old school) had always called it a "female" operation. I did not ask her to come for the operation. Didn't want anything negative in my thoughts. Christmas is a very upbeat time for me. Glad I had it done during the season, because my spirits are lifted.
I believe life is good and now is going to get better. Dec 3 (date of surgery) is the beginning of the rest of my life. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to start again at 41!
Merry Christmas!
