Ask A Doctor
I know that embarrassment is probably the last thing that I should fear with my hysterectomy, but it is still causing me worry. I know a Vaginal surgery would be better for healing, but it seems more embarrassing than abdominal surgery. I have no idea why. Have others felt this sense of fear at exposure and wondering what they do or say when you are out of it? Any suggestions for dealing with it? Have you expressed this fear to your doctor and, if so, what was his/her reaction? My ob/gyn has been my doctor for almost ten years, but he is a male and I still have a major sense of fear of embarrassment. Help!
What you are feeling is very normal and its okay to ask and be concerned about your privacy and your fear of being embarrassed. Talk to your doctor about all your concerns. With today's provacy laws your surgeon cannot tell your information to anyone without your signed permission. Your surgeon will want to alleviate your concerns.
If you've watched any videos in the HysterSisters video library, you will notice that every patient is draped while in surgery with only the body part needed for surgery available. Sheets will cover you.
From the medical professional's point of view you can be assured that they are more concerned about taking care of you and keeping you safe while in the hospital than anything. Any doctor or nurse that has been in the medical profession for a while has seen most everything, but that's not the point. The point is that they are professionals and their job is to take the best care of their patients possible.
I hope this has helped some and do not ever minimalize your own fears and concerns. They are real to you and any doctor or nurse with an ounce of professionalism will acknowledge them and help to assure you of your privacy as much as possible.
