I am now 46 and have children and grandchildren. I don't need my uterus anymore so I asked for the hysterectomy. I will be keeping my ovaries. Now I'm worried that I will regret my decision. I worry about sexual dysfunction. I worry about menopause. How can I know I'm making the right decision?

Unfortunately, there is no way to know for sure you are making the right decision. Depending on your medical history and your diagnosis, you should take your time to explore all your alternatives and options when it comes to your gynecological health.

Many women report that they feel better after their surgery. These are typically women who's lives were severely hampered by the presence of heavy bleeding or symptoms with large fibroids. And most women get through the recovery process without complications and go on to enjoy their lives post-hysterectomy.

Some women, however, are not satisifed with their hysterectomy outcome. They struggle with sexual dysfunction or with hormone replacement that doesn't quite work to manage menopausal symptoms.

The best way for you to make the decision is in partnership with your doctor, exploring all other treatment options first and the making the decision based on your particular needs.
