What should I expect after getting a TVT sling?
A Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) sling is used to correct stress urinary incontinence, which is a condition that allows urine to leak when sneezing, coughing, laughing, or otherwise putting pressure on the bladder. The TVT sling is a ribbon or mesh-like structure placed permanently under the urethra and attached to the abdominal muscles above the pubic bone to prevent stress incontinence. The sling is placed through small vaginal incisions. If the TVT sling procedure is performed without any other procedures done at the same time, the surgery will probably take about half an hour, and recovery may take a week or two.
For a few days after surgery, you probably will not be able to urinate on your own and will require catheterization to clear your bladder. Some women have no trouble learning to self-catheterize, but others may need assistance with this. Unless there are complications, such as the sling being too tight, your urinary function should return to near-normal in a matter of days. If you cannot urinate on your own within a few days after surgery, your sling may be too tight. This can be fixed in a follow-up corrective surgery, which will delay your recovery time but should restore your bladder function more quickly.
Sisters recommend finding a surgeon with a great deal of experience performing the TVT sling procedure, as doctors' experience is the greatest indicator of the procedure's success rate and lack of complications. They also suggest lining up help for two to three weeks if possible to assist you in your recovery.
