Ask A Doctor
Does lidocaine hydrochloride help with painful intercourse?
If you experience painful intercourse after a hysterectomy or other gynecological surgery, your doctor may recommend trying lidocaine hydrochloride, a topical numbing gel, to help you tolerate sex more easily. For example, if you have pain around the vaginal cuff during intercourse, you can apply lidocaine directly to the painful area. The area goes numb, allowing you to enjoy sex without the pain. Lidocaine can be applied with a finger, or, if the painful area is deeper, with a syringe-like insertion device.
Sisters who have used lidocaine give some pointers for using it to its best effect. They suggest using a very small amount and applying it carefully to make sure it numbs only the area that is painful. Avoid getting any on the clitoris, or you probably won’t be able to achieve an orgasm since the clitoris is the most sensitive spot during intercourse and is responsible for most female orgasms. Wait about 10-15 minutes after applying the lidocaine to let it absorb and to ensure that it won’t transfer to your partner’s penis and numb him as well and might cause an extended and painful erection. If you give it sufficient time to absorb, it will not affect your partner.
Though using a numbing agent in order to tolerate sex is not ideal, and many women and their partners resist the idea of having to be partially numb to have intercourse, lidocaine does make it possible for some women with vaginal pain issues to enjoy sex again and satisfy their partners and themselves.
