Does a high CA-125 test result mean that I have ovarian cancer?

CA-125 stands for Cancer Antigen 125. The CA-125 blood test is used as a tumor marker that may be higher in people who have certain types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. Though a high result on a CA-125 test MAY indicate the presence of a tumor, it is not considered a reliable test for early detection of ovarian cancer. It is a better method for detecting OC recurrence than as a screening tool for early stage cancers.

If you had one high result followed by one or more normal results, it is unlikely that the one high result indicates the presence of a tumor. A tumor would presumably keep the levels high. Also know that an elevated CA-125 result can also be due to relatively benign conditions such as endometriosis and other inflammatory diseases of the abdomen and pelvis. Finally, the test is not very sensitive, and patients who do have cancer do not always have high CA-125 results.

In short, do not worry overly much about one high CA-125 reading unless it is very, very high, such as 1000. Otherwise, try to be calm and patient as your doctor continues testing to determine the cause, if any, of your high result. The next step will probably be an ultrasound to see if there are any suspicious masses on your ovaries.
