Ask A Doctor
I got a second opinion about my cancer treatment, and now I’m totally confused because they were totally different! How do I decide which one is right?
We always recommend getting a second opinion whenever possible, but sometimes two physicians’ recommendations are so very different that it makes choosing a treatment path that much more difficult. It is already difficult enough to think clearly through the fear that comes with a cancer diagnosis and the frightening stories you might hear or read in the course of your research. Seeking the advice of HysterSisters who have been through similar treatments is a great place to begin clearing away the confusion. You can ask them anything, and you are highly likely to get honest feedback from a Sister who has walked your path before you.
When you have armed yourself with some more clarity, some pointed questions, and a will to fight, seek a third opinion. If one opinion you received seemed overly aggressive, and the other seemed too timid, perhaps a third opinion will fall more within your comfort zone or agree more fully with one or the other of the first two opinions, thereby making your decision easier. Sisters often recommend erring on the side of more aggressive treatment rather than risk finding after treatment that the cancer is more advanced than your physicians realized or that it will recur. Sisters also lean toward trusting the opinions of gynecological oncology specialists more than other types of physicians. But ultimately the decision is yours. Know that you are not alone. Seek the support of family, friends, physicians, spiritual advisers, and support groups as you choose and go through your treatment and recovery.
