Ask A Doctor

I had a hysterectomy where they cut me from hip to hip, staples and all. My doctor told me that I would be swollen for six months to a year. Well I am still swollen. I work out every day at the gym just like I did before the surgery. My belly is still swollen near my belly button. I am not uncomfortable except when I accidentally hit my belly like I did yesterday on my medal desk at work. I also am not able to run - still sore when the belly jiggles up and down. I have explained the feeling of my belly compares to when your hand/foot goes to sleep. Numbness, funny feeling to touch, etc. My doctor told me to put heat on my belly. So after all of this I still am swollen. It is effecting me wearing pants, etc. Any suggestions? My biggest fear it will never go down. Very self conscience of this since I am in pretty good shape and then looking down my body my belly sticks out. I am tired of wearing baggy shirts. Sorry this is so long. This is kind of depressing.

When a large abdominal incision is made, it can many months for the swelling to subside and the inflammation to go down. The numbness around the incision may never go away if nerves are damaged. if you have one particularly sore spot I would see a physician and make sure you don't have an incisional hernia.
