Is insomnia a symptom of menopause? Is my hormone replacement therapy causing it?

Some women do report insomnia following menopause or a hysterectomy. Most agree that it is a result of HRT that is not quite right. Sisters recommend seeing your gynecologist again to discuss different HRT options or supplements. For example, some women say that a higher estrogen dose, such as an HRT containing 100% estradiol, resolved their sleep issues. Others needed to supplement a ring or patch HRT with a vaginal cream containing estrogen. Still others found that their estrogen levels were fine, and they needed to nudge their progesterone with a cream or oral dose to reach a balance.

Everyone is different, and it may take some time to find the right combination of treatments to get you in balance and sleeping soundly. Your frustration with insomnia and your desperation to resolve it are completely understandable. Be as patient as you can and communicate frequently with your doctor about any improvements or new symptoms you experience as he or she adjusts your HRT.
