I had a hysterectomy but kept my ovaries. Why do I get vaginitis every time I have intercourse now?

Vaginitis is inflammation of vaginal tissues due to a bacterial or yeast infection. It can also be caused by reduced estrogen levels after menopause. Vulvovaginitis is inflammation of both the vagina and the vulva (clitoris, labia, and vestibule of the vagina). Symptoms include unusual discharge, burning, itching, irritation, and painful urination.

If you are getting vaginitis after every single time you have intercourse, you may be experiencing low estrogen levels that lead to vaginal dryness, which in turn causes excessive irritation to vaginal tissues and makes them more vulnerable to infection. Even if you kept your ovaries, you may be in perimenopause (pre-menopause), or your ovaries may be shutting down due to your hysterectomy (a type of surgical menopause). Ask you doctor to check your estrogen levels if you suspect that this is the case. The solution may be as simple as using an estrogen cream applied to your vagina to help solve your dryness and irritation issues.

General rules of thumb for preventing vaginitis and vulvovaginitis include avoiding hot tubs and whirlpools; using unscented bath products, soaps, tampons, and pads; and wiping from front to back after using the toilet. Other preventative measures include wearing cotton, breathable panties,; using condoms during intercourse; and not douching. Douching can actually make your vulnerability to infections worse by disrupting the natural balance of organisms in your vagina.
