Ask A Doctor
I had a biopsy done, and waiting for the results is almost unbearable. I’m so worried, and I can’t stop thinking about the possibility that I have cancer. How do you deal with the waiting?
Waiting for test results can be one of the most difficult parts of dealing with a possible cancer diagnosis. HysterSisters who have been through this process have the following advice for dealing with the unique and intense anxiety of waiting to find out:
“Yes! The waiting is so hard! It's ok to be going a little wiggy—it wouldn't be normal not to! One thing you can take comfort in is that these cancers, if present, tend to be very slow growing. You are now on track to take care of whatever the trouble is. I made use of a good book and CD called "Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster" by Peggy Huddleston. I even got the anesthesiologist to say the affirmations, and they let me listen to the audio while I was under. (My hospital actually promoted its use.) The CD comes with a good relaxation audio that really helps while waiting. Do check it out. In the meantime, be good to yourself and check back here anytime.”
“I would recommend journaling. You can get out feelings, emotions, and thoughts and not bother anyone. I would find a quiet time alone in case I felt like crying or screaming, and afterward I would rip up the pages, shred them or burn them. It so helped me stay sane.”
“My doctor was kind enough to give me some Klonopin for the anxiety. I usually don't need anything for that, but today was tough. I did tell my friend about my cancer. She was relieved to know and happy to share her story. I was glad... SO glad to have her to bounce things off of. There is no doubt that having someone to go through this with means the world! She understood the feelings I have had. She understands the way you kind of just go NUMB when you hear what you are facing. She understands the helplessness you feel when you see your family hurting and there is nothing you can do.”
“Arm yourself with knowledge and surround yourself with positive people. Though researching your symptoms and potential diagnosis on the Internet can uncover some scary stories and statistics, it can also make you feel empowered to face whatever may come. If you do not have people you can talk to and lean on in your life, then rely on the support forums at HysterSisters. Talking to women who have been through what you’re going through can really save your sanity by reminding you that you are not alone.”
