What do all these specialists I’ve been referred to do?

Sometimes, when you have a complex and difficult-to-treat condition, you may find yourself with a rather extensive medical team that includes a variety of specialists and caregivers. Here are a few of the types of physicians and caregivers to whom you might be referred to be diagnosed and treated for your gynecological condition:
  • Primary Care Physician (PCP): Your regular family practice doctor or generalist.
  • Gynecologist: Specializes in gynecological (women’s) care.
  • Oncologist: Specializes in cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Gynecologic Oncologist: Specializes specifically in gynecological cancers.
  • Urogynecologist: Specializes in caring for women with pelvic floor dysfunction.
  • Pathologist: Analyzes results of biopsies and blood tests to make diagnoses.
  • Radiologist: Analyzes results from scans, such as CTs and MRIs, to make diagnoses.
  • Radiation Oncologist: Treats cancer with radiation and x-ray therapy.
  • Urologist: Specializes in diseases of the kidneys, bladder, and urinary tract.
  • Geneticist: Specializes in analyzing genetic information to identify existing genetic markers and familial predisposition to certain conditions and diseases.
  • Hematologist: Specializes in disorders and diseases of the blood; for example, if you become anemic due to chemotherapy, a hematologist might perform an iron infusion.
  • Psychologist, Psychiatrist, or Therapist: Can assist patients in dealing with the mental and emotional impact of the stress, grief, and fear of dealing with complex, chronic, or life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Radiology Tech: Runs scanning tests on patients.
  • Phlebotomist: Draws blood for analysis.
