I started with painful heavy periods about 1 1/2 years ago. Once we got the bleeding under control, with the use of birth control and other meds, the pain in my uterus increased. During a routine exam I cried in pain as he pressed on my uterus. I suffered from some form of pain every day, and if my bladder got the least bit full it pressed on my uterus and hurt. We tried antibiotics but with no relief. Ultrasounds showed nothing but cysts that came and gone and one even ruptured. Eventually the doctor said it was time to remove the uterus and get this taken care of.
In the weeks leading up to my surgery I was overcome with fear. I had scar tissue from an ecoptic (sp) pregnancy, and the removal of my appendix. This site helped me in every way possible. So here's the rest of my story;
On August 24th I woke up and started my day on a liquid diet. At 2 pm I left work and started my bowel cleanse. I drank the magnesium citrate and it was nasty but not unbearable. About 30 mins later it hit me. About my 15th time to the bathroom I couldn't take it anymore my bottom hurt so bad I had to soak in the shower. This helped a lot. I got to bed about 8 that night.
Woke up the next day and headed to the hospital. Unfortunately I was still cleaning my bowels got to the hospital at 6. My husband had to leave me to go get diapers. They called me back (alone) and I gave a urine sample, got a shot of blood thinner in my arm (burned real bad), started the iv (which was hard mind you I was dehydrated) and drew blood from my other arm. Then she gave me something for my stomach, and an antibiotic. As soon as all that was over my husband came back just in time for them to take me back.
When I got to the back everyone was so nice. My PACU nurse had just returned from having this done herself. She even let me use the restroom before they got me all drugged up. I was visited by the pulmonologist (sp) who gave me my breathing treatment. They placed the circulating booties on me, gave me something to take the edge off, and oxygen. Each part of the surgery staff checked in on me and soon we were good to go.
They wheeled me into the surgery room and I was so nervous I wouldn't shut up. I moved onto the other bed and they put something in my iv. I cried it burned so bad and then they placed the mask on me and I was out.
I woke up saying I had to pee and a man responded "you have a catheter it let 'er rip" I remember thinking how rude that was and how bad I wanted the catheter out. I told them I was in pain and they gave me meds but I just kept saying it. Finally someone told me "you just had a hysterectomy you are going to be in pain". Then I woke up in my room. I had cotton mouth bad. I took a sip of water and got very nauseated. The nurse brought me meds and some tea. The nausea quickly went away and I was feeling much better. I had a demeral pump and I felt the pain but didn't care much. I was able to drink lots but it still took me many days to eat again. I slept a lot.
The next day I woke up and my whole bed was shaking. I thought it was the machine at the end of the bed, but it shut off fast and I thought I was either having a seizure or I was going into shock. I was terrified. I called the nurse, nobody came. I called them again, nobody came. I texted my husband because I thought I was dying. Turned out...it was our first earthquake! Luckily I was fine. When my husband got to the hospital I decided to walk. This helped with gas a lot. Ever since I woke up I felt like I ha to burp and finally I got some relief! Gas pain was no joke and it caused some pretty bad shoulder pain, but I got through it. Later on that day they removed my catheter, I peed, and they sent me home with percocet. I don't remember much of the first days. Just sore, no real bad pain. I slept a lot and made sure to walk a little each day. My first bm (on day three) was scary and painful but I managed tomorrow marks one week for me. I have rode in the car twice but never made it longer than 10 mins. I walk daily and haven't used any pain meds today. I did get constipated today (don't let that happen) and it was very painful. One of my three incisions is very itchy, but there is no swelling or anything anymore! I would do it all again in a heart beat!! Good luck ladies and don't be afraid you will be great!!
