I've been going to the same gynecologist for many years, and I adore her. However, my friends are telling me I should get a second opinion before going through with the procedure she recommends. I don't want to insult her or hurt her feelings by going to someone else, though. What should I do?

If your condition is not considered an emergency requiring immediate treatment, you should always seek a second opinion about gynecological problems. Gynecology is a complex specialty, and there are many approaches to treating gynecological conditions. There are a wide variety of treatment options available, and doctors' recommendations are not always based on the most current and effective treatments and solutions. And sometimes, traditional approaches turn out to be better than the "latest and greatest" treatments. Some doctors are more aggressive than others; some are more comfortable with new techniques than their colleagues; and some are more willing to spend time really pinning down the source of your problem before taking action. A physician should not feel insulted when a patient seeks a second opinion, though some certainly do. Your attachment to and trust for your gynecologist is understandable, but the decision you make now might be life changing and impact your health and lifestyle for many years to come. You have to put yourself first and do the best you can to make an informed decision. You do not want to feel at any point in the future that you made a mistake not seeking that second or third opinion before committing to a procedure that you are no longer sure was the correct choice. Your relationship with your gynecologist would be harmed far more by blame and resentment for a treatment gone wrong than by seeking a second opinion now.

You deserve a second opinion. Just explain to your gynecologist that you trust her completely, but that you want to be sure you are completely informed and are totally comfortable with your treatment plan before moving forward. A good physician will understand your need to make an informed decision and will support your desire to seek another doctor's input. She may even have referrals available to you to help you find a good doctor to give you your second opinion.
