Ask A Doctor
i have suffered from flare ups of diverculitis in the past that were controlled with antibiotics, rest and diet. For the past 2 years I haven't had ANY symptoms and have been healthy. i had a total laparoscopic and vaginal hysterectomy with cystocycle/rectocyle repair 2 weeks ago and from the moment i woke up i was in terrible spasmatic pain. I was told it was from surgery but knowing my body after 1 week of unbearable pain i started antibiotic treatment with almost immediate relief. My question is: do you see women who suffer from diverlicutitis have flare ups after surgery? How do you treat them post hysterectomy?
Reply by Keita Sakon, MD
I don't believe that surgery would necessary cause a flare up of diverticulitis.
I'm not sure that the treatment post-hysterectomy would be any different, but if you had a lot of mesh to repair your prolapse, I would be a little concerned about diverticulitis doing weird things to the mesh, i.e. possibly infecting the mesh if diverticulitis were in close proximity to the mesh and if it ever ruptured, but that's probably pretty unlikely to happen.
