Ask A Doctor

Hi, my name is marestail and I am a Colorado native. We are a rare breed!

I have been married for 20 plus years to a wonderful man, whom I met in college. We have three cats, with two being litter mates. DH and I enjoy having litter mates (we have had several pairs), as they seem to always stay close. During the day, I am an air pollution meteorologist and I work for an environmental firm.

My hysterectomy was a total surprise for me. During my annual exam in April 2011, my GP found a large mass in my abdomen. I had no symptoms and did not know it was there. I was quickly scheduled for an ultrasound which showed a large complex cyst on my left ovary that was 12 x 9 x 11 cm. An MRI confirmed the diagnosis. However, neither could tell if it was malignant. I was sent to a gynecologist who became quickly unnerved at the size of this thing (not real comforting) and sent me to a gynecological oncology surgeon. This doctor said that I needed an immediate total abdominal hysterectomy with a bilateral removal of tubes and ovaries. I got back in the car with my DH and cried. I went from perfectly healthy to being in the OR in four weeks. Not easy to digest, and not much time to plan. The surgery was performed and all was thankfully benign.

I found HysterSisters just before going into the hospital and I joined as soon as I got home. I joined my hysterectomy week recovery group thread and together we recovered from this surgery. We shared our problems, helped each other, pooled ideas, and gave each other emotional support through a very difficult time in all of our lives. I found plenty of information on this site to answer my questions and help me through many problems. This web site has been my salvation and has kept me from going insane - it kept DH from going insane as well. I will always be grateful for this site, and the wonderful, strong women involved in creating it and keeping it going. I found much healing here.

Once, long ago I heard a line in a movie: the world was made round so that we cannot see too far down the road. I always liked that sentiment, and have thought much about it since my hysterectomy. I think it is very true that if we knew what was coming at us we would probably freeze in place. But we don't, so we just keep going forward. I also think that is part of the secret when bad things happen - to keep going forward. The friends you meet along the journey help you move forward, and that is what HysterSisters is all about.
