Ask A Doctor

Four years ago I had a vaginal hysterectomy. Every since then I have been diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis. I didn't have this before the surgery. Now I get the symptoms and diagnosis all the time. I've been given Metronidazole Vaginal Gel. I am married and he's the only sex partner I have. What can be done to keep the bacteria from returning so often?

Reply by Keita Sakon, MD

For those people with recurrent BV, you can ask your doctor to give you plenty of refills for metronidazole pills or metrogel to use as needed.

I give my patients boric acid suppository prescriptions to use as needed as well, or there is a product called RePhresh that you can buy over the counter that also lowers vaginal pH that can help prevent BV.
