I had a Robotic Hysterectomy on Sept 6 of this year. The first week was rough, but gradually it got better. For the past 3 days I have had pain in my right side of my belly. It feels like someone is stabbing me. When I sit, move or lay down the pain jabs me. When I walk, I am fine. I am having trouble passing my bowels so I am thinking it may be a gas bubble. I am taking stool softeners and gas-x strips. Should I call the doctor or wait until I have a good bowel movement?

Reply by Keita Sakon, MD

Since the very terminal part of the colon is on the left side, it's probably more common to have constipation related pain on the left side, although if you are really backed up it could be a diffuse pain.

If you don't have fever, chills, nause/vomiting, I believe that you "probably" don't have anything serious and may just need to have some good bowel movements as people get constipated with narcotic pain medications. lots of water and stool softner is a good idea, but should your pain persist or get worse, I would definitely contact your physician.
