Ask A Doctor

I'm seeing a new specialist who is AMAZING. She is nationally recognized and highly sought-after. But I was supposed to hear from her office after my MRI over a month ago, and I haven't heard one thing. I've called and left countless messages, but the secretary doesn't answer the phones; she lets the machine get it and calls back. I was supposed to have more tests ordered after the results of my MRI returned, and then I was supposed to have surgery. I verified with the imaging place that the MRI was sent, confirmed the fax number and had them re-send it anyway. Still nothing. What should I do?

You could try going to the doctor’s office in person. It’s much more difficult to ignore a person standing in the office than a message. Be polite, but make it clear that you plan to wait until someone speaks to you about your status. You could also make an appointment for the next possible date, and then you’ll have your doctor in the room with you to discuss your results and upcoming steps.

However, you have to assume that if your doctor and her office are ignoring you at this stage, they are very likely to continue this behavior throughout your treatment. Do you want them to ignore your calls when you are recovering from surgery? This specialist, being nationally known and highly sought-after, has possibly taken on too many patients and simply can’t keep up with the load. She may have “VIP” patients that she or her staff puts ahead of others. Perhaps she feels that she can get away with it because she's just that good, and there are plenty of other patients lined up to see her. Or, she may not be aware that her staff isn’t passing messages along to her. This is when you must ask yourself if her reputation is worth your stress in trying to communicate with her. If the answer is yes, and she is simply the best of the best and you are willing to put up with anything to have her be your doctor, then so be it. But tell her when you do manage to see her that it has been a problem so far. Perhaps she will take steps to correct the situation. However, if you need a physician and office that will respond to you more promptly, then move on. Choose another surgeon and have the imaging service send your results to him or her. Again, let the first surgeon know why you chose another doctor. She might not know that her office staff is ignoring patients’ calls.

Ultimately, it is your health and your life at stake. No matter how good a doctor is, there are other doctors who are extremely good at what they do as well, plus they communicate effectively and caringly with their patients. You will have to decide what is most important to you.
