What are the different types of cancer cells?
Carcinoma
Carcinoma is the most common type of cancer by far. It forms in epithelial cells, which make up the skin and the covering of internal organs.
Adenocarcinoma
Cancer that begins in the epithelial cells that line the surface of glands is called adenocarcinoma.
Clear Cell Carcinoma
This is a rare type of cancer cell that is clear or pale in color. It is most likely to be found in the urinary tract and the female reproductive system.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
These cells affect the surface skin and are caused primarily by sun exposure.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Squamous cells are flat cells on the surface of tissues. Cancer that begins on the surface of skin, an organ, or a body cavity is called squamous cell carcinoma.
Carcinoma in Situ
This refers to a stage of cancer. Carcinoma in situ means that the carcinoma cells are in an early stage of development and are confined to the thin layer of epithelial cells where the cancer first formed.
Invasive Carcinoma
This refers to a stage of cancer. Invasive means that the carcinoma cells have begun to penetrate more deeply into the affected organ and/or have spread to other parts of the body.
Sarcoma
Sarcoma affects the cells of connective tissues such as cartilage, tendons, bones, muscles, and the fibrous tissue in the organs (fascia). This is called soft tissue sarcoma. There is also osteosarcoma, which forms in the bones.
Lymphoma
Lymphoma cells affect the lymph nodes and lymphatic system. Lymphoma and leukemia are closely related, and both are called blood cancers.
Leukemia
Leukemia is blood cancer. It forms in the bone marrow, where blood cells are made.
Glioma
This type of cancer cell specifically affects nerve cells in the brain and forms brain tumors.
