Hi Sisters!
It has been over 4 months since I had my complete hysterectomy. After 9 long years of heavy bleeding, almost continually, I found a Dr who would help me. Since I was young they tried everything to "fix" me. From Lupron to D&C's. However on August 1,2001 I got my true fix!
My surgery was scheduled for 8 am, my DH and I drove our daughter to my sisters and picked up my Mom and arrived at the hospital about 6:30am. I honestly have to say I was SO excited that I wasn't at all nervous. I laughed with the nurse and joked with my mom and hubby. The down side was they couldn't get my IV started so the anthesologist had to do it right before surgery and it took him 4 trys. OUCH!
Anyway the next thing I knew was being wheeled into surgery. They put the mask on my nose and that was it. I was out.
My incision is app. 7 inches long, right above the pubic hair line, I was in surgery for about 3 hours. When I woke up in recovery it was SEVERE pain. My first memory was writhing on the bed. My nurse quickly gave me moraphine which immedatly helped and I dozed off and on. After about an hour, or so they tell me, I was taken to my room. I don't remember the ride at all, but I did wake up enough to scoot myself over into my bed with no help from the nurses. I vaguely remember my mom and hubby, but not much else that first day.
On day 2 I felt better, anxious for my oxygen to be removed. The nurse gave me a bed bath, then I slept. I had some visitors and I know I talked to them but I don't remember it much. If I ever have surgery again I will ask people to wait til at least the 3rd day.
They took my catheder out and I also got rid of my oxgen. They only gave me broth and I didn't like it so I ate jello and lost some weight! Ha
Day 3 I got bad news, They found cancer in my uteras. They think they got it all. I hope so. I have to go back every 6 months for checkups. I also needed and received 3 units of blood. That took a long time, and you have to drink LOTS of fluids when you receive blood because your body will try to reject the blood. My nurses were great, they even made me ice tea so that I would have a pleasant drinking experience.
I left the hospital after 4 days. It took time, but now I feel like a new person. I feel more energy now then I have in a long time. For you that have just had surgery, give yourself lots of time. Recovery doesn't all happen in 6 weeks. There will be days after 2 months that you will still feel tired. But just wait , you will feel better.
I have just finished organizing and participating in our church play. I homeschool our daughter and another boy from church. I am also the secretary for my husbands busy construction company. I teach sunday school, play the organ and teach a wednesday night bible class. I can honestly say that there is no way I could have done this 6 months ago.
I am just so thankful for a second chance at life!
