I LOVED reading these posts just two weeks ago. they definitely helped me with what to expect for my visit. Hope mine can help someone. Here goes:
Tuesday 12/11. I arrived at Hospital at 12:45 for 2:30 surgery. Nurses and everyone very nice. Wait with mom for them to come wheel me down. 2:30, 2:45, 3:00, send mom to see what's up. "We're backed up with some emergencies," we're told. 3:30, 4:00, finally 4:15 someone comes to take me down. Say goodbye to mom and am wheeled down to OR area.
Met outside by anestheiologist who explains what he'd like to do and goes over my history as last minute check. He seems very nice and commends me on how calm I am. Wheeled into OR and meet about 4-5 more men. (Are there any women?) One looks just like a former student of mine, but says he went to a high school across the bay. I almost don't believe him. The resemblance is stunning. Get onto operating table, but don't remember how. DR anesthesiologist starts IV amazingly well and tells me I will feel it immediately. No kidding. I'm out in seconds. Never saw my DR.
Barely remember waking up in what must have been recovery room. Anesthesiologist tells me all went well. I pass back out. Never saw my DR.
Wake up in room some time that night. No idea when. Mom is there as is lovely roommate Doris. Pain pump explained, no doctor in sight. Guess I'll see him later some time. Don't remember much about this evening at all. Never saw my DR.
Wed. 12/12. Next day, this is the bad one, I'm bleeding/spotting. No one seems to notice. I sure as heck can't sit up to see it. My mom notices it. Where are the nurses? She gets them, they give me pad to put... where??? I don't have any underwear on. Pass in and out of sleep most of day. Sit up with much effort and pain. Stand up later with more of same. Vomit from morphine, this is miserable. Doris is a dear and when I'm not moaning. We get to chatting fairly quickly. While dozing, near 8PM, my DR calls. I ask him where he's been. He says he spoke with me after surgery. I couldn't believe he actually expected me to remember that or anything he said at the time and tell him so. He says he is still in surgery but will try to come see me that night. I say great. DR shows up at midnight. I'm asleep. He pats my ankle and says everything went well. I forget all of my questions: did you take both ovaries? any visible cancer? etc. because it's MIDNIGHT and I'm asleep!
Thur 12/13. Next day, I self-stop using morphine and feel better right away. Start walking down halls as often as possible as I want out of this place. I'm very slow, but enjoying being out of room. Catheter and IV removed per DR's orders - THANK GOD!! Wish I could drag Doris out with me. She's a hoot! Friend comes to see me, and guess who else?? DR AND my primary care physician. Turned out she assisted at my surgery. Both came by to check up on me. DR takes out my staples and surprises me by telling me I can go home tomorrow after breakfast with no restrictions. I can drive, go back to work when I feel well enough, eat what I want, etc. I was surprised, but thrilled to be getting out of there. He leaves and I go for one last walk down halls to celebrate my impending freedom.
Fri 12/14. eat breakfast (was on liquid diet whole time.) They never got it that I'm vegetarian, despite me telling at least 4 nurses. Jello, chicken broth; they brought me every animal-based liquid thing they could find. Finally, the last day, a nurse brought me something not based on animal products. I thanked her but was on my way home to some real food. Wheeled down to my car. Mom drove me to freedom and my waiting crown - I'm a princess now!
All in all, I was surprised at the nurses, I expected more from them, like remembering to come change my pad (bleeding stopped before I leftt he hospital. First time in 45 days!) I couldn't believe they kept bringing me the wrong food, but that's not the end of the world.
Since being home, I feel much better. I drove at day 6 and felt fine about it and have since. I walk around and go on small shopping trips for one thing at a time. If I can't carry it easily, I'll come back for it after a rest. This is a bad time of year to be stuck at home unable to shop! One trip to the post office for one thing. Not the PO and Trader Joe's and Target!
I was very up about this surgery before I had it. The waiting was not the worst part for me then, it was the first day. But I knew it would be better, much better the 2nd day, AND IT WAS! Every day has been better than the previous one. I wish you all well.
