Well today marks exactly 2weeks from my surgery and I can finally say I'm feeling solid. Strong? I'm getting there.
I started this rollercoaster back in August when my chiropractor ordered an xray on my lower back due to pain that I have worked on for about 5 years now. I could not get rid of this last very specific pain and went back to him to try to identify what this may be. The xray revealed a large mass and suggested an enlarged uterus.
I in turn went to my primary care to confirm that I had a fibriod uterus and was suggested to see a GYNO. After a ultrasound both abdominal/vaginal and an MRI we found that I had been dealing with not simply multiple fibriods, the largest being 11.5cm but stage IV endometriosis. I also found that I have been anemic.
I was so embarassed after realizing that I have been blaming myself for months for poor workouts and a lack of desire to continue my running. I now realized that I was ill and as most of us women do, we blame it on ourselves rather than take a step back and look at the bigger story. I had also know for months that I've had a problem as this pooch appeared in my belly and seemed to grow. It was especially obvious in the mornings when I would wake up and have to empty my bladder. Instead it was the fibriods not allowing room for my bladder to fill and causing me multiple trips to the bathroom at night.
The other part that was so embarassing was answering questions regarding my "flow" during my cycle. Do you have heavy periods? Well what exactly do you consider heavy? I found after simply talking to the doctor that my periods were not the norm and when I shared some bad episodes I knew it was wrong for me to think "this is just something that happens to women".
I have cried alot, for good reasons. Today I am feel of my back pain and I feel I am getting stronger not only in my body, but my mind and soul.
I chose to have an abdominal surgery on my doctors recommendation due to the size of the largest fibriod, the fact that I don't plan to have children, and to allow my doctor to explore and remove as much endoemtriosis as possible.
After two weeks I am feeling pretty good. I was able to keep one ovary which was cored due to endo that was deep inside it. The mini hot flashes are happening but with a little hope I believe I can stay away from any drugs. I believe that should only be a last resort and as I have seen over the last 2 weeks the body is amazing.
Hyster sisters has been a valueable resource as I am able to read other sisters stories and consider all of my options. As much as I appreciate everyones stories, remedies, suggestions I also know that having trust in the doctor you choose is so important.
Listen to suggestions from your sisters, but be sure to develop those questions and bring the list with you to each appt. If you have a good doctor, they will gladly listen and answer each one for you. If you live in the Boston area I will gladly recommend my doctor who was amazing throughout.
Good luck & happy holidays to you all.
