Hello dear friends!
I reported to the castle at 6:30 AM Monday morning. Was pre- registered so at the first desk I received my second bracelet(had a pink one on from pre-op visit for type-cross and match blood just in case needed). This one was orange.
I was taken to a little room and given a backless gown, white stockings with holes in the top of the toes and grey slipper-socks. The gown was blue with red and dark blue diamond shapes all over it.
Was tagged with another bracelet, bright yellow with my drug allergies on it. Put my clothes in a plastic bag with my name on it provided by the castle.
Given a personal chariot(wheelchair).
Joined DH in a little waiting room for the doctors pre-visit. Comment was "OOOO what a lovely ensamble(sp?)"
Didn't wait long till doctor came in explained the whole procedure to DH. Called it a Video Laproscopic Laser Total Hysterectomy and the actual words for BSO. Removal of both overies and tubes. Plus he would be looking over any and all organs that he could find. Could wake up without anything that was diseased or bad.
Told DH that it would take about 2 hours unless there were problems.
WE all shook hands and I kissed DH good-bye and he was escorted to never-never land(waiting room). I was wisked off to the pre-op holding.
Before I had a chance to worry my anesthesiologist came by and reviewed my drug allergies, what I didn't have to eat, if I completed bowel-prep sucessfully(I did). Told me they would start my I.V. shortly. Shook my hand and disappeared.
Nurses hooked me up. Another nurse came in with two needles, said "don't worry honey these are going in your I.V." She popped them in and said "we will be taking you in shortly good luck."
The very next thing I knew, I was trying to focus on this big clock above my head. Somebody whispered in my ear " that beeping is you dear it means you are not taking deep enough breaths. If you hear it try to breathe real deap, ok?" Think I tried to say ok. Focussed on clock and thought it was wrong. It read 1:30!!!!
After concentrating on breathing deap started to wake up more. Told them their clock was wrong, lots of chuckles, assured it was right-then wondered how bad the surgury went.
About 2:00 was deemed ready to move and was on my way (dizzy ride) to my room.
Was met by a VERY anxious looking DH.
Surgery took 4 1/2 hours and DH was sooooooo worried.
DH explained the details. Fibroid was 12 lbs. Main artery to rectum was stretched over the fibroid tight(could have torn or ruptured.) both overies were stuck fast to the walls of the abdomon. Bottom half of fibroid stuck fast to the rectum with the bladder pinched in between.
Another woman's pain is acknowledged! I am vindicated!
Anyways, In and out of it till around 4:30.
Supper tray brought, wasn't thrilled with the idea of food. Tomato soup. sipped at it and surprise I finished it. Drank some milk.
Nurse comes in and tells me I should go to the bathroom since catheter was removed before I woke up. YES I just about cry. Filled their measuring cup to the brim. Nurse informs me I have made my first milestone.
Next couple hours I work at drinking and dragging IV to bathroom.
Getting back into bed I blow my IV. Get stuck in other arm. Have to learn how to handle it again on next trip to bathroom.
Send DH home at 9:00. Nurse realizes I have not asked for pain meds. Grills me on level of pain. I insist I am just sore on top like bruised. Settle for some Tylonol to make her happy. Check tummy for first time and am indeed bruised to beat the band!
Shut out lights and get woke up at 11:30 shift change. Meet a golden angel named Paige. Makes me turn over on my side and stuffs pillows every where. Sleep soundly till 4:00. Sweetheart Paige gets me on the other side. Next thing I know breakfast was there and sweet Paige was gone.
Will find a way to thank her! Uninteresting food--ate it all ravonously(sp?). Nurse says "feel free to walk as you wish" Walk to see the babies. Huh, no babies-only one on floor-rooming in with mother. Oh well walk was fun.
Last dose of anti-biotics in IV at 8:00. IV pulled. Free to do as I please!
Walking produces second milestone.(grin). The more I walk the more I toot! DH calls me his bag of wind.
Eat lunch, walk, eat supper, walk. No third milestone yet. Doctor shows up and is surprised at my progress asks if I want to go home. Gives me 3 pages of instructions and says see you in 4 weeks unless you have a problem!
Now I am sitting in my favorite easy chair sooo glad I am done. I do not intend to find out what the pillow police look like.
Looking forward to the third milestone(had a big bowl of oatmeal this morning).
I must thank you all because I was so prepared and I felt the presence of each and every one of you with me all the way. Love you all.
