I had robotic assisted radical hysterectomy, BSO, and lymphadenectomy on Dec 23. I am 6 days out and my recovery is amazing. I have 3, 1 inch incisions on my abdomen with surrounding bruising...that has begun to fade. My steri strips can be removed tomorrow if they do not fall off in the shower. I had moderate pain after surgery and accepted Morphine IV once, then went to oxycodone by mouth. I stopped the Oxys on day 2 because when they wore off I was very shaky. Tylenol has provided adequate pain relief since and I have not taken that for a full day. My urinary catheter was removed immediately when surgery was completed. I was up to the bathroom within 5 hours of surgery. My bowel prep had dehydrated me, so they had to push IV fluids to get me to void. After that...no problem. My dedicated husband stayed the night with me and helped me singled handedly to the bathroom 3 times in the night. I was eating soups the eveing of surgery and a full diet...although not much appetite...the next day. I was discharged about 24 hours after surgery. I asked for pain medication just before I got into my car for the 2 hour drive home. It did the trick and I dozed almost all the way home.
My progress has been amazing. Days 2 and 3, gas was a problem, but Gas X helped. Colace and PRUNES did the rest of the trick. I have had no difficulties with BMs. I walked outside at our usual walking place both of the last few days, although not as far and fast. This morning, I actually did a bit of housework, using my "grabber" to pick things up from the floor.
I know that not everyone is a candidate for Da Vinci robotic surgery, but if you are, I recommend it. I am a nurse and I remember when we women were sliced stem to stern for hysterectomies and ended up in the Hospital with pain and disability because of it. Recovery took months, not days or weeks. This method of surgery is miraculous to say the least. My surgery is considered major surgery, but it now can be done with minimal damage and with a rapid and smooth recovery. I am a 62 year old large woman, so even with my risk factors, I have made remarkable progress.
I was 100% pleased with my care at Maine Medical Center and also with my surgery and recovery so far.
My most useful tips so far 1. MOVE as often and as much as you can 2. Drink tons of water and other liquids and eat PRUNES 3. Take Gas X and colace to soften stool 4. Love your family and be nice because you will depend on them a lot 5. Get your catheter out as soon as possible because peeing on your own is a milestone used to get you discharged 6. Deep breath and cough 6. Get a grabber
