I am 38 and using the Femring. My doctor dropped me from 1mg to .5mg without discussing the change. I am at the end of the first three month cycle and am experiencing terrible vaginal dryness and mood shifts. Is this normal? Do I need to go back to 1mg?

Reply by: Susan Hunter, MD

Good question. It sounds like going back to the 1 mg Femring might be a good idea. Generally young women are good candidates for a little higher dose of estrogen until around the age of menopause. I do not know all of your specific situation, including whether you have had a hysterectomy plus or minus the ovaries; your height and weight; diagnosis that resulted in hysterectomy with removal of ovaries at a young age; any other medical issues. Because of this I cannot say for sure what would be the right choice. You should definitely discuss the issue with your doctor so you can come up with the best choice for your individual situation.
