Ask A Doctor

I have always had very painful, heavy periods. I had taken birth control for years to help control symptoms. Which helped for awhile! But after going to Africa to minister to orphans in two countries, it came with a vegence. My period lasted 5 weeks, blood clots larger than ever before. Everything the Dr was trying wasn't helping and every test came with more and more problems. For me, planning to move to a third world country has to be in my decision making. I knew i cant return, anemic and constant pain. I had 3 options after months of trying everything. 1. Do nothing and continue with iron infusions and on heavy pain killers. 2. Ablation (but the issues could return) 3. Hysterectomy. I leaped at that option.

I had a month to wait for surgery, which was very emotional. I was facing the finality of it all. But I was desperate for relief and yearning for Africa.

I was so blessed as my cloesest friend, surprised me and flew in from California to be by my side. Saturday morning i was so nervous, but after she showed up i couldn't stop smiling! It really helped to distract me from surgery on Monday. I really needed that. Sunday i had to fast, then cut off clear liquids as well at 10PM. I was very shacky being anemic already. The bowel prep wasn't so bad! I think fasting helped that.k the Dulcolax 5pm. At 7:30 i had about an hour on the loo. But that was really it!

Monday morning I arrived at the castle with my mom and friend. I went to the front desk, signed some papers, and got my lovely jewlrey (hospital bracelet). Then i was sent right up to the maternity ward. They showed me to my room, and i was relieved to have a private room! I changed into my gown. The nurse started my IV, and i was able to get things where i wanted it when i got back to my room. My pastor came and shortly after my Dr came in. My Dr is great and answered all their questions (i already asked him my three pages of questions at my pre op appointment!) He assured me he would do everything to do it LAVH. Then the anisestia guy came in, and asked if my pressed pillow pet was for him. He had a great sense of humor. I was getting really nervous and shacky at this point so that funny anistesia guy gave me a valuim. He was ever funnier after that.

About twenty mins later it was time to go. They rolled me into the OR. Once i got in there, i scooted off my bed and onto the OR table. I was glad i took the valium, the OR wasn't as scary looking. They asked me the same questions, name, bday, and why i was there. Then i was out!

I woke up in recovery and remember moaning and breathing in a way to control my pain. The nurse asked me rate it, which i told her 8. She put some mess in my IV. I could feel my body waking up. It took some effort to start moving my arms and legs. The anestesia didn't make me nautilus, but itchy. Esp my nose. She asked me again to rate my pain, 6. So she gave me another dose. My pain then was maybe a 3. At most a 3. So then i just talked to her, about her cute valentines day scrubs. She kept telling me how awesome all my vitals where.

So they took me back to my room. Where my mom and Cindi were waiting. I was so glad to see their smiling faces! Then i slept again. Actually all three of us napped awhile. (We had to leave at 5am, and Cindi jet lagged!)

I had a cath in till 8pm. Oh and when i got back to my room, my mom had the milk shake i said i was craving waiting for me! The only time my pain got over 5, is when i didn't say anything and tried to wait it out. DONT! Don't try and be the strong women. They say you heal slower if your in pain slot. So tell them honestly when your in pain! I even had a steak dinner with my friends that night.

I had a hard time pee'ing though. I didn't pee on my own till 9AM on Tuesday. But since then, i have been pee'ing.

Now I'm trying to let my friends spoil me. I am recovering at home by myself, but have friends stop over twice a day to do what i cant and bring meals. I'm sleeping a lot and i only have pain when i again hold off to long to take pain meds. Still needing percocet.

I have had maybe 3 spots of blood since surgery. And that's my story. The pain is different than before, more manageable and in all I'm already feeling better in do many ways than i did pre op!
