Ask A Doctor

Hello, I have had my total abdominal hysterectomy 1.5 years ago (I'm 45), and I was left with one ovary. I have been experiencing menopause like symptoms off and on lately, (last 6 months), and I would like to know how to tell if my remaining ovary is still working, and if I can attribute these symptoms to perimenopause? Also what are the odds of earlier menopause with one ovary? Thank you

Having one or two ovaries does not change when you go into menopause, but if you have menopause like symptoms, you are probably getting close. There is a blood work you can do to find out if you really want to know, and if it's bothering you, hormone replacement can be prescribed by your doctor if you wish to take it.
