Hello all:

I am 8 weeks post- op and this is the first time I will be really talking about my experience! I had a TAH on 11/1/01. I was admitted into the castle the night before. I am not sure why except my Dr. said he wanted to get things ready and be on time since the surgery was at 7am. So, in I went and then the fun began - NOT! I had an enema, got shaved and got those lovely stockings put on my legs. At about 3am I fell asleep then at 6am they woke me up and it took 3 nurses to start my IV. They said I was badly de-hydrated. They should have inserted the needle at least the nite before but, they didn't. Finally after blowing 2 veins they got it. Down to the Pre-Op holding area until around 7:15am. the ansthesiologist's talked to me and one prayed for me. They let my mom stay with me until I was wheeled away. Last thing I remember was seeing my doc. in the OR then lights out! The next thing I remember was waking up in my room at 3:30pm in a TON of pain. I was told it was more work than they thought so it took longer. Total surgical time was about 2 1/2 hours. That afternoon and nite my dh was pushing the "button" of my morphone drip all day I was told as I moaned in pain. I was taken off the morphine the next day and was told that I had to keep the catheter an extra day because I had a bladder suspension as well. Endo. was all over my bowles, uterus etc... Saturday (2 days post-op) the catheter was removed and I was allowed to get out of bed. A binder was put around my stomach for support and helped with the pain. I was able to eat solid food this day also but not much of an appetite. I walked with a walker that afternoon in the hallways and my dh brought my 2 yr. old to the lobby and they took me down in a wheelchair to see her. They let my dh sleep in the room with me all 3 nite's as it was a private room. Sat. nite dh brought me McDonalds but I did not eat much although it felt good to have outside food! He also brought me new magazines and we sat together that nite and talked and read until we went to sleep. Sunday I went home around 2pm. The ride home went well, I had a pillow on my tummy. Once home I was on Tylenol w/ codeine & in bed. I sat on the couch later and tried to watch a movie but was very dizzy so back to bed! The next few days were bascially in bed/couch. I made the mistake of lifting my 2 yr. old at about 6 days post-op and that burned and hurt! 1 wk. post-op I went to the mall and grocery store for a short trip. About 3 weeks post-op I was still very weak and was not able to walk or stand for more than about 20 min. at a time. 6 wk. post-op check up went OK. Pathology reports confirmed adenomyosis & endometriosis but no cancer. Also explained to me that during surgery my B/P was elevated and they had to stop for a while. During this time they suspect I suffered a mild stroke. I have lost some of my short term memory due to this. At 6 weeks I was exhausted still and not all the way healed but coming along nice. I was put on viatmains and told to walk 2-3 miles a day and no caffeine. I just returned to work after 8 weeks off and I feel wonderful! NO PAIN! I went into the castle with my period of course and 2 days post-op I was done with the bleeding! I am so happy this is over with and wish all of the ladies in waiting all the best!
