My surgery went really well. GYN said the trainee would remember it for the rest of her career - that such a large fibroid mass could lurk with minimal symptoms and without being obvious in my small frame. Surgery was booked rapidly with concern regarding a potential ovarian cancer, so I didnt really have a choice, or get much chance to prepare - thankfully I found this site. Physically I have recovered well. I made a real effort to get fit in the two weeks I had before surgery, and I believe it paid off. I was off pain killers by day 10 and have been progressively getting more mobile - now at week 3. Mentally it has been a lot harder to cope with. Hubby has been less than helpful so I have to try really hard not to overdo things. And I am grateful to good friends (and unexpected people) who brought a succession of dinners. I was elated when the histology came back as not malignant, and a few times when I have been struggling with recovery I have had to remind myself of this feeling. Probably the biggest thing I wasnt prepared for prior to surgery was the swelly belly. I came out of hospital and found I had nothing soft to wear. I do have suitable clothes in storage but obviously couldnt get at the attic! I borrowed a dress off my daughter who came home for a couple of days which I have had to wear for 14 days! Fortunately I am getting back into my own clothes now.
