Ask A Doctor

I had surgery a few days ago. Prior to my surgery, my workout routine consisted of lifting weights along with a few group classes several times a week. I recently had a hysterectomy, and the doctor said no lifting for eight weeks, nothing at all for a few weeks, and then I can use the treadmill, stepper and elliptical. My stomach is swollen, as I had expected. I am curious though what others have experienced after a hysterectomy and returning to the gym. How long did it take to look like your pre-hysterectomy self?

It's wonderful that your lifestyle includes taking care of your body by staying active and making physical activity a priority. Since you are so early post-op, it is very normal that your belly is swollen and you wonder if you will ever get back into shape. Patience and time will be your best friend.

First off, you will want to make sure that you are following your doctor’s instructions, including when you are able to work out again, as you do not want to cause a setback. When you are released to working out again, be sure and take things slow. You will discover you tire easily and may not be able to do all the things you did prior to surgery right away. Again, be patient with yourself and your recovering body. Overdoing things can actually set you back so be careful and always ask your doctor specific questions about your recovery. If you are involved in certain fitness classes, be sure and get those cleared by your doctor.

Members have had good results easing back into working out by starting with light cardio on the treadmill and light weights, working the upper body. Some utilize universal machines. Members have cautioned on cardio machines, like the elliptical, that require arm movement. These types of machines can cause some strain on the core. Be careful with the lower body and core as you continue to ease your body back into it’s old routine.

Lastly, timing for your body to return to it’s pre-hysterectomy can be different for each woman. Some women find themselves back to their old original selves three months after surgery, while other say it took them six months to a year. Every woman is different depending on the surgery, their body and activity level before surgery and recovery.

While wanting to get back your pre-hysterectomy body is normal, patience will be the key. Let your body heal, continue to involve your doctor with your questions and concerns and ease back into your workouts.
