What happens during a hysterectomy done through vagina?

Reply by Geoffrey Cly, MD

Short question, but a potentially long answer. I will try to keep the answer short and concise. I believe you are referring to a "vaginal hysterectomy" also known at Total Vaginal Hysterectomy (TVH).

During a vaginal hysterectomy, the cervix and uterus are separated from the pelvis and vaginal tissues and removed from the body. This is all done through the vaginal canal. The ovaries are not removed in a TVH.

If the ovaries are going to be removed then the procedure would also be a bilateral salpingoophorectomy (BSO).

Hope this helps.
