Ask A Doctor

I have been battling Endometrial Hyperplasia and fibroids for over seven years with limited success. I've had multiple biopsies, D&Cs, and have tried many different types of birth control including an IUD, which ended up causing infection after infection, before I got a doctor to believe that something was wrong. As of right now the heavy bleeding is controlled with high dose birth control, but still have issues with spotting and cramping. When talking to my current doctor whom I trust, she mentioned that it was time to start considering more drastic surgery options including getting rid of the fibroids, destroying the lining, or a hysterectomy. I am only 38, so far from menopause. My mother died of aggressive cervical cancer at age 54 before even showing signs of menopause. Am I just putting off the unavoidable by trying one of the other surgeries before a hysterectomy? Would either of the other options even be a possible solution? I'm trying to find all the information that I can before making a decision.

You have successfully delayed a hysterectomy for 7 years. An ongoing question to consider now is whether it will be worth the potential need for more medical or surgical interventions/treatments vs undergoing a hysterectomy. I would hope your doctor will guide you on this decision.

I do want to stress the importance of keeping your ovaries so you will not go into menopause if you have a hysterectomy.

Personally, since you have been through so much in the past 7 years, I would start discussing a daVinci hysterectomy with you and try to determine if that was an appropriate next step.

Hope this helps. Dr Geoff Cly
