I am 55 years old with a daVinci hysterectomy 3 weeks ago. Everything is gone, tubes, ovaries, cervix and, of course uterus. I have read some horror stories about the vaginal cuff tearing after sexual activity. I am extremely apprehensive about tearing the cuff and the repercussions of that. My stitches have not yet been checked but will, of course, by the six week mark. Is there any way a doctor can insure that there will be no tearing during sex? What is the percentage of vaginal cuff dehiscence associated with this type of surgery? Should I wait longer for sexual activity? Thank you for your help with this!

Your questions are valid, but there is no need for worry.

Vaginal cuff dehiscence is uncommon with daVinci hysterectomies. It was more common in the early days when I and a few others around the country were just starting to use the daVinci system for hysterectomies, however, we have learned a lot and changed multiple things for several years now that have resulted in much less risk of this occurring.

That being said, do not have intercourse until your doctor gives you the green light. Early intercourse before the cuff heals is a huge risk factor for dehiscence.
