Ask A Doctor

I had a hysterectomy four weeks ago, and when I saw my doctor recently, she said I was still having minor bleeding inside. She also said I had a bacterial infection, and on the page she gave me to take to the pharmacy it said bacterial vaginitis unspecified. We also talked about hrt replacement because I am having severe hot flashes, and then I get chilled. My mood is all over the place. She put me on a low dose of Prempro, and the antibiotic Flagyl. This morning I had severe low abdominal pain, and have been hot and then cold all day. When I got home tonight about 11pm I took my temperature, and it was 99.3, which is a little high for me. Any suggestions? Should I call my doctor tonight since I am having so many problems?

Reply by Geoffrey Cly, MD

Something unusual seems to be going on.

Yes, please call your doctor and ask her to evaluate you. Also, please ask her to clarify the treatment plan with you and explain what is going on. Minor bleeding "inside" the abdominal cavity at 6 weeks is not something I have heard of, but minor bleeding at the vaginal cuff inside the vagina is a common thing.
