I'm currently scheduled for a DaVinci Hysterectomy in a few days. One of my anxieties is how many workouts I'll miss? I've worked very hard for the last three years, and I'm worried about the muscle I'll lose. I actually sought out a DaVinci doctor hoping that this would get me back in the gym quicker!!

What is the recovery time from a DaVinci hysterectomy for very fit women? My trainer assures me that at the level I'm at recovery should be much quicker than for those who don't exercise. My doctor says within days I should be able to walk on a treadmill. When I mentioned doing lighter lifting with more reps at three weeks he said that would be up to me and how I felt.

Thanks in advance!

It’s great that you make physical fitness a big priority in your life! Lots of members have the same concern as you, wondering how long and how fast they can get back to their workouts, especially when it comes to the daVinci or laparoscopic hysterectomy.

While your external scars may heal quicker with a DvH (DaVinci hysterectomy) or laparoscopic hysterectomy, all hysterectomies take roughly the same amount of time to heal internally. The uterus has been removed and there will be tissue healing internally, whether you’ve had a TAH (Total Abdominal Hysterectomy) or a DvH.

You might feel better a lot sooner than someone that's had an abdominal incision but it is still important to take it easy when it comes to full exercise program post-hysterectomy. It could take 6-12 months to fully heal internally from a hysterectomy. Remember, everyone is different and heals at different rates.

For members who reported to be in great shape, their doctors reported that they will probably heal better than the average woman because they are in such great shape. And while they should be able to get back to their exercise program around 6-8 weeks post-op, they may not feel completely up to it even at 12 weeks post-op.

There have been some, with textbook recoveries that tried to get started back to exercising too early. Instead, they caused setbacks to their recoveries with injuries to newly healing tissue. If you are attempting to get back to working out post-hysterectomy, go cautiously. Do not push yourself but instead allow yourself to fully recover by resting, relaxing and not over-doing things. You don't want to setback your recovery by pushing too hard, too fast.

Above all, your doctor is your best resource for your return to working out, etc. They know you and your case and the procedure performed. Just remember to ease back into things and listen to your body. If you experience any heaviness or even slight pain, stop. Don't cut back and go lighter, just stop. Try again after another 3-4 weeks and see how you feel.

Best wishes for quick healing and getting back to your pre-surgery fitness level!
