Feeling FABULOUS at 6 weeks!
Hi ladies,

I thought a story of a great outcome might help those who are waiting and scared about what it to come.

Since June 5 I had heavy bleeding, sometimes not able to leave the house. My Doctor is a wonderful lady who worked with me through the months. I started using progesterone in July and that finally slowed things down to a trickle but never turned off the faucet. An endometrial biopsy came back as "complex endometrial hyperplasia with atypia" which is a precancerous condition. It can either be treated with hormones like Lupron or hysterectomy. I just turned 50 in November and have adopted my kids as I could not have children (another long story!) so the hysterectomy seemed the logical choice. My Dr. emphatically told me that the cervix must go but the ovaries were my choice. I had four out of five risk factors for ovarian CA so it was a no-brainer decision - but made with alot of trepidation. Conversations with people I know who underwent the same procedure were really reassuring as they all said they never felt better and the sex was great! Even my 80 year old aunt called to tell me at 32 she had it done and never looked back.

My surgery was on December 3, 2001 at 7:30 in the morning. I walked into the OR, climbed on the table and don't remember anything until the Recovery Room. They had alot of trouble getting my pain under control but by the time nighttime rolled around I was feeling OK. I told the doctor to slap an estrogen patch on my bare behind in the OR which she graciously did and I have yet to have a hot flash or any symptoms! I was in the hospital for five days and they let me walk out with my husband (no wheelchair!)as I was doing so well. My only small hassle was some problems with the incision healing properly. It was the third surgery in the same spot and the incision had to be cauterized twice to get it healing properly.

By the next week I was doing short walks around the neighborhood and even went out for a short lunch with my Mom. ( both folled by lots of rest!) At my four week checkup, the doctor gave me the OK to ramp up all activities as I felt comfortable with my only restriction being no exercise that increased intraabdominal pressure. I went back to my Health Club and started doing some easy cardio work and using VERY light weights. This past week my Trainer devised a program for me that spares the abs but works most of the muscle groups. I'm up to an hour of cardio and about 20 minutes of weight work.

In short, I feel better than I have in months. I lost 12 pounds within two weeks of the surgery and it seems to be staying off (something I was totally unable to do prior to my hyst) My emotions are very even and everything (I mean everything) is better than ever!

I know not everyone has as smooth a road as I have been lucky enough to experience but my hopes are that everyone eventually reaches the happy state I have been blessed with!

Good luck to everyone!

Peg
