Hi all it is very cathartic to write things down on the computor even if nobody reads it or it sounds a little self centered. But here goes.

On May 7, 2000 I started having vague urinary tract symptoms like frequency and burning. Being the good RN that I am i went to my Dr. (oh ya didn't actually see Dr. only Rn practioner) No UTI but she found what she thought was a cyst after a quick pelvic exam. She scheduled me for a sonogram for a month later. After that initial pelvic exam my symptoms got worse, severe constipation (to the point I thought i might have a bowel obstruction). I suffered for about 4 more days until my husband came home on a thursday night and found me crying lying on the floor in really bad pain. We went to the ER were they gave me good drugs and did a STAT sonogram and found a very large Fibroid tumor. it felt good just knowing what was going on that it helped me to feel better. The next day i got on the computor and found out all i could about Fibroids, and i bought a gallon of prune juice, (which really helped that constipation). Next stop was the Gyn Dr. and he suggested a TAH/BSO due to the fact i had had endometrosis in the past he didn't think my ovaries would be worth saving. within one week my HMO had okayed the surgery and I had a date 6/7/00. I couldn't belive things were happening so fast. i had my pre-op appt. with the Dr. an 6/6/00 and thanks to everyone on this site I was armed with all the right questions.

6/7/00-Day of surgery I was scheduled late at 2:00pm they got started around 3:00pm and I woke up in recovery (screaming in pain) at around 6:00pm. My surgery lasted longer because they found a second tumor on the outside of the uterus that had grown up around my left ureter and kidney. So the dr. took special care not to damage the uteter. the recovery room RN's were great about giving me pain medicine and getting a handle on the pain. After recovery they took me to my room and put me on PCA (patient controled analgesia) its the only way to go. Mine was Morphine and I could push the button every ten minutes for pain medicine. I keeps you at an even level so no ups and downs. 24 hours post op I got a fever 102, and the Dr. got worried he kept the catherter in and kept me in bed one more day. I also had to have an IVP xray on my kidney to look for any obstruction. That was painful to have to lye flat on the xray table. no obstruction so the Dr. put me on flagyl IV just in case. 48 hours and the PCa was turned off and I started on Percocet they worked really well for pain. and the catherter came out, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Getting up was a little difficult but I managed it about every hour to use the restroom.

One week post op --I came home from the hospital last Saturday and so far Ive been a good waited on hand and foot by my husband and daughter. The last couple of days I can stand up a little straighter and walk a little further but Im still really tired. I can't believe that before surgery I thought i would be well enough by last friday to go to the Movies ( shaft is out and i know my husband wants to see it) I can barely get a shower in the morning without being exasted.

thanks for listening
