Ask A Doctor

Greetings. It has been 16 months since I had my Hysterectormy. Although it hasn't been at times the easiest adventure of my life, it certainly has improved the quality of my life.

The reason I had a hysterectormy was because I was suffering from prolonged bleeding and substantial pain. I had gone through a tubal ligation 9 months before; removal of one of my fallopian tubes and removal of gall bladder 7 months before - for a total of 3 surgeries. I had lots of test done and nothing was showing up besides the growth of a tiny fibroid and a polyp.

The pain and bleeding had reached such epic levels that I couldn't even sit still in my doctor's office. At that point he cleared his schedule and scheduled me for an emergency hysterectomy 2 days later. He told me it was going to be done via the da Vinci robotic surgery, and that although he expected the procedure to go normal; there was a chance he might have to do an abdominal one. He also adviced me he was going to leave one ovary so that I wouldn't go into menopause as I was "too young"

The surgery was a success - it was done via da Vinci and one ovary in tact; and I woke up with my doctor telling me he hadn't found any surprises and that he I had adenomysis (SP?). I was in no pain - thanks to the morphine and my dr. stayed with me while I was in the post op section. I stayed in the hospital overnight and was released the next morning.

I was warned to take it extremely easy for 6 weeks. Something, unfortunately I couldn't as my husband travelled a week after surgery. I didn't do much for the first 3 weeks and then I started back slowly. Recovery was rough. Depression, anxiety and pain accompanied me every day. This went one for months. My doctor gave me medicine to ease the anxiety so I could sleep; and zoloft for the depression and asked that I see as psychiatrist. I did - and it helps with the depression and the anxiety - some of which I still struggle with - but not to the extent that I did right after the surgery.

The pain continued though and after a series of tests, it was determined that my remaining ovary had to come out 3 months after my hysterectomy.

After that surgery I was put on the vivelle dot and went about my life.

A few months later, I had terrible bouts of pain on my right and left sides; it was discovered that I had pelvic floor issues; and the pain I was feeling were horrible muscle spasms. My doctor recommended a pelvic floor specialist who then recommended pelvic floor therapy. I have been in therapy since May of 2012 - approximately 1x per week and it helps. Although the spasms are entirely gone, they are a lot less painful.

This adventure was not what I expected - I had expected some pain after surgery but then a month or two after the hysterectomy, I expected life to go back to normal. It didn't. HOWEVER, with the help of a wonderful team of doctors, I am almost there and VERY happy to be where I am.

My advice to anyone who has problems (either physical or emotional) after your surgery - speak to your doctor ASAP. I did and he was able to get me the help that I needed (as I didn't expect anxiety and depression to be such long lasting side effects).

I wish everyone who is about to go through this surgery good luck. I truly felt that Da Vinci was the way to go. Less incisions; and a faster physical recovery.

My thanks to all my hystersisters and this wonderful website - without which I wouldn't have had a place to vent, listen and receive advice.

Thank you.
