I thought everyone might want to read a positive outcome to surgery. My experience was nothing but good. My story might help those who are fearful!
I was diagnosed with large fibroid tumors in my uterus. My only symptom s were heavy bleeding during my period and the inability to wear a smaller pant size despite loosing 30 lbs. A TAH was scheduled for June 15. My DH went with me the day before for my pre-op visit with dr. He was very supportive and asked questions. The dr. made him feel the fibroids. Even though I had showed him he was impressed when the dr. showed him exactly were the fibroids were.
We were in the car and headed for the hospital at 7:00 am. My surgery was scheduled for 9:30am. Once at the hospital I had to wait in one room and then was taken to the main surgery waiting room to wait some more. That was the worst part, waiting. At 8:45 I was taken back to the first pre-op room. The nurse that prepped me was going to be with me throughout the surgery. Her name was Jill. She asked some questions and I got in my lovely gown, socks, and hat. She brought my husband back so we could say goodbye. She said we would see each other when I was taken back to my room. He wouldn’t be allowed to see me in recovery.
I was then taken to the surgery waiting room where there were several others waiting on gurneys. Once there an IV was started (not as painful as I had feared because she numbed the area). My stomach was shaved and I met the anesthesiologist. Then Jill put something in my IV that “would make me happier I was there”. She found out my dr was scrubbing so we were on our way to the OR. My dr came over to me and said hi. I remember him saying that his partner and a med student would be assisting and that’s the last thing I remember until waking up in the recovery room in lots of pain. A remember a man (anesthesiologist or nurse?) asking me to rate the pain from 1 – 10, 10 being the worst. I don’t remember what I said but I saw him injecting different things into my IV and I remember him saying that the morphine was working so he was going to try Demerol. I asked if I could move to my side & he helped me. Then the next thing I remember is he said I was going to me room & he needed to cover me up so I wouldn’t “moon” everyone.
The next thing I knew I saw my husband and daughter waiting for me in a hall. I asked how big the “babies” were and he said grapefruit sized. The nurses got me settled. I wanted to be on my side. They showed me how to use the med pump.
The next morning I was slowing down on using the pump. Early in the morning the nurses tried to get me to sit up but the room was spinning. They decided that it was the demerol that was causing it and took the pump away ( I hadn’t used it in a while anyway). They gave me tylenol with codeine. Then they took the cath out, took away the oxygen and got me up and walking to the bathroom. It took me awhile to get the bladder going but by noon I was going to the bathroom on my own about every ½ hour! I also switched my pain meds to extra strength tylenol.
That night I didn’t sleep at all. The gas pains had started. The next morning I started walking the halls. The nurses figured that I walked ½ mile that day. The night before going home I slept pretty good but still had tons of gas. They gave me medication that helped. I was up again and walking at 6:00 am and then success…my first bowel movement! I felt like a new women. The dr. came in at 8:30 and discharged me. He told me to come into the office in a couple days to get my staples out. The incision is vertical (about 6” long)
I’m not 8 days post op and feeling great. I still get tired and have to remind myself not to do too much. I can feel little twinges in my pelvis that my dr. says is the internal stitches. He said I’ll probably feel them for the next 4 –5 weeks.
It turned out that the uterus weighed in at almost 1300 grms. And the fibroids were indeed grapefruit size. The dr. said that it was one of the largest uterus’ (sp?) that he’s removed.
I’m glad I had it done. Actually with the size of the fibroids, I didn’t have a choice. The drs. and nurses have been great and so far my recovery has been uneventful!
