I am 2 weeks post op now, and finally feel up to writing my little story.
I went to the hospital on Wed. at6:00 AM for my surgery at 7:30. They took me to a very nice room with a bed and chair in it for my dh. I put on my lovely gown and a nurse came in to start my IV. We were only there for about 15 minutes when they came in to wheel me to the waiting room. They told my husband he could wait in the waiting room. After they settled me in I asked the nurse if my dh could come in just to see me. We held hands and said a prayer. Just then my doctor who would be giving me the anesthesia came in and asked me a few questions, and soon my dr. came in. They gave me a shot to help me relax and before I knew it my husband left and they wheeled me into the operating room. I was awake enough to realize it was cold in there, and they transfered me to the table. Next thing I know I was in recovery. I was very groggy and kept telling anyone who would listen that I had to go to the bathroom. I later found out that it was because of the packing in my vagina that made me feel that way, but at that moment I had no idea why i felt that way. My doctor came in and checked on me. He told me that he had been able to do the LAVH, but couldn't do my bladder repair and A&P repairs laporascopically(sp?) so they had to do an incision and finish the procedure through my abdomen. THAT'S what I felt. So basically, I had BOTH procedures done. I certainly hadn't prepared myself for that possiblity. I had 14 staples and was very surprised. They took me up to my room and I promptly fell asleep for 4 hours. My dh was there when I woke up, and kept reminding me to push my button. I felt very nauseous, so they gave me a shot of phenegren. After DH left, my roomie and I were watching Friends, when all of a sudden the lights went out. Neither of us could get out of bed and our nurses call lights were not working. The door to our room was closed and no one came in to check on us. I finally had to call my dh at home to ask him to call the front desk, and ask them to open our door and check on us! Turns out a snake had climbed into a transformer, and cut all power to the hospital. The lights stayed out for hours and my morphine pump stopped working. It had a battery back up, but that ran out too!!! Even after the lights came on it wouldn't work but I had the nurse from &(*^*( working that night and she kept insisting it WAS working. NOT... the morning nurse confirmed what I was saying and finally gave me a shot. Thank heavens. After that my stay was fairly routine. The next day my husband brought me a print out of all your responses to his post (he posted the first night to let everyone know I was okay). That really made my whole day. What a great picker upper!!! I got up Thursday morning and tried to walk. I brushed my teeth, brushed my hair, etc. Anywhere I went I just carried my "pee-pee purse",as the nurse called it, and walked around. I moved around alot and can honestly say I had no gas. I believe it was because I got up and moved around right away, but maybe it was just me, I don't know. But by Friday night I was able to go home. The only problem was my bladder wasn't working, so I came home with the foley. They took it out 5 days later, but even at 2 weeks post op I am still having some problems. I feel the need to go at least once and hour and have had some discharge, but my doctor gave me some medicine which I'm sure will help me in no time.
All you LIW's...it really is true. The waiting IS the worst part. Would I do it again? Definately, only sooner!! I have a wonderful doctor, terrific family and friends who have all pitched in to help and I believe (if it's possible) I have fallen in love with my dh all over again, because of how supportive, loving and helpful he has been. Also, I think I was very prepared for this surgery (except I would encourage LIW's who are to have a TVH to read about TAH just in case), and it was all because of the wonderful sisters who answered all my questions, let me rant and rave when I needed it, and who I carried in my heart the day of the surgery. This is a wonderful site and am forever grateful I found it. Thanks again for everything. So ladies, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Love,
Marie
