Robotic Assisted Hysterectomy June 5, 2015

From the da Vinci Hysterectomy Stories Articles List

Sooo, my da Vinci robotic assisted hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy plus removal of fallopian tubes, and sampling of nodes and omentum was done on June 5th. I knew I had an aggressive uterine cancer before surgery from a hysteroscopy under general anesthesia a week prior. I had an additional complication of being 7 weeks postop from laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for weight loss (which I would NEVER have done before having the hysterectomy and treatment for cancer). The doctor decided to use one of my healing incisions, and healing from that one (once I was off IV dilaudid and tramadol) just about killed me. :-) Okay, my first sneeze did. I thought the pain would never go away (once off IV meds), but I sneezed today (about 8 days postop) and no pain.

I do now have 9 incisions on my stomach in various stages of healing...5 from the sleeve and five from the hysterectomy.

So, the day before surgery, I watched half of a video of a da Vinci assisted hysterectomy before quitting in sheer terror. :-) So, when they wheeled me into the operating room, totally cognizant and alert (with me saying "I'm supposed to be asleep, aren't I? The Versed was supposed to make me sleep"), I stared at the big guy...resembling a white Transformer. And I asked again..."aren't I supposed to be asleep? I don't want to be awake!" :-)

Never fear. I was out at some point after fussing and didn't wake up until recovery. :-)

I don't know if robotic assisted hysterectomy is better or worse than standard laparoscopic, whether it's more painful or less, whether recovery is shorter or not. I have no experience with the other, but generally, I feel the wounds are a bit larger, certainly for the camera port above the umbilical cord. (I know this because of the video.) My doctor put a coat of glue over my incisions, and I've sort of watched the shiny glue with fascination. No germs getting in there, uh uh... And I do feel recovery is slower, but again, I've got stuff missing "down there" and I'm not really sure what stuff is moving around or shifting positions. :-)

That's about it for me as far as the robot is concerned. :-)
