Vaginal Estrogen for the Pelvic Floor

From the Pelvic Floor Articles List

vaginal estrogen is a good idea for the health of your pelvic floorCan vaginal estrogen be helpful for treating issues with my pelvic floor?

Your vagina, pelvic floor, and pelvic organs rely on estrogen for strength and elasticity. So when menopause hits and your estrogen level decreases, your vaginal tissues, urinary tract, and pelvic floor can become weak, putting you at risk for prolapse, discomfort, and pain.

Vaginal estrogen is one of your options for treating menopause related pelvic floor concerns. It can be used directly in the affected area, offering direct relief in lower doses. Since only a small amount will reach your blood stream, you maybe be able to use vaginal estrogen even if a systemic form is not for you.

Vaginal estrogen comes in several different options: creams, gels, suppositories, rings, and pills. Each form has its own advantages and disadvantages, possible side effects, and doses. You and your doctor will need to discuss each one, your severity of symptoms, and your particular diagnoses to decide which may be best for your situation.

Vaginal Creams or Gels

You have a few options when it comes to vaginal creams or gels: premade versions like Estrace or Estrogel, or one made specifically for you by a compounding pharmacist. The cream or gel is applied to the inside of the vagina using an applicator. Your dose can be adjusted by using more or less, or the compounding pharmacist can add more or less estrogen.

Vaginal Suppositories

A compounding pharmacy can create a vaginal suppositories just for you. It can be made with the dose an ingredients you and your doctor decide are best for you.

Vaginal Rings

A vaginal rings can provide either localized or systemic estrogen, depending on which one you choose, or about three months. One of the benefits for using a ring is that you do not need to remember to apply it on a regular basis.

Vaginal Pills

Vaginal pills are inserted into the vagina where they dissolve and offer localized estrogen. The dose can be adjusted by how often they are used, or if you use the entire pill.
