After an agonizing 12+ hours of stomach pain, I went to the hospital; they found fibroids; one was estimated to be 6 cm. I reported to my GYN the next day (it had been 3 years since my last checkup--shame on me!) and he ordered more tests, which found I had too many fibroids and a total hysterectomy was needed. I think I went immediately into shock; I was only 41 and childless. The surgery was on the January 21st and when I came out of the recovery room (after 2+hrs) they asked what pain level from 1-10 was: I said 12! Then they started the morphine drip; in the beginning I guess it helped the pain. However, it made me sick. I couldn't eat or drink--came right back up. My wonderful husband had a private nurse's aide in my hospital for 8pm-8am shift all 3 days. That made it much better. By the morning after the surgery I was up and going to the bathroom myself, dragging my IV all the way. I had to have IV for 2 days of the 3 because I couldn't keep any food down. They let me go home on the third day only because I ate breakfast (toast) and didn't throw up. It was horrible. Dry heaves when you have 14 staples is agony.
When I got home, I had severe constipation. It took 7 more days until I could go to the bathroom. I stayed home for 4 weeks (except visits to the doctor). Didn't drive the car until then. Went back to work at 6 weeks; could've used 8, but you know how that goes. That's how I spent my winter vacation.
Update - July 2000: At the 6 month mark and doing fine. Gained a few pounds in the stomach area; trying to get adjusted to the hormones, too. Next doctor appt. is September; then I'm good for a year I hope, but the fibroids are gone (7 of them!) and I am feeling wonderful....maybe a little more tired than I used to be, but I'll just have to rest more. Taking Premarin 1.25 for now; always looking at alternatives. Experiencing some swelling in my hands as well as a few headaches.
I just want to say that this website is fabulous!!! I'll always be a "Sister". Keep up the good work.
